Before reading these articles (published in Costa Rican newspapers and Guatemalan newspapers), I will remind you that we do not know how much was sensationalism NOR the details of the case.
I'll leave it at that.
Posted by Kelly at September 24, 2003 12:36 PMWhy post articles such as these when they are typical sensationalistic journalism? This just adds fuel to the fire of the hysteria surrounding adoption in Central America.
I am shocked that a website dedicated to such great work would include articles that indict people that have yet to be tried.
Posted by: Anonymous at September 24, 2003 03:20 PMThe purpose of this website is to let adoptive parents know what is going on. I did not republish the articles and I do not endorse them in any way. You will notice that I mention the possibility of sensationalism and the title is "Atmosphere in Costa Rica NOT GOOD" as opposed to some inflamatory title. My opinion is that to be an *educated* adoptive parent, you must understand the atmosphere in Guatemala (and in this case, Costa Rica)....and one way to do that is to read THEIR papers.
I will keep this site as objective as I can (being an adoptive parent that is not always easy). Raids have happened in Guatemala and sensationalized....and later, the targets were found innocent (though THAT is never published it seems).
I'll clarify one thing right now...read these articles with a grain of salt. Like me, you should have a list of questions that were not answered in the article (regardless, of the spin).
Posted by: Kelly at September 24, 2003 03:45 PMBefore jumping to conclusions, let's remember that this kind of thing happens all over the world with international adoptions, and we cannot assume that an agency is guilty (or an individual) until we know all the details. Sometimes there are big misunderstandings within a country, especially when there are groups against adoptions. Let's wait for details on this before pointing fingers. I truly hope there was no intentional wrong-doing here.
Posted by: anonymous at September 25, 2003 09:56 AMAnonymous, who is pointing fingers? How did you get that from Kelly's post? She simply posted the articles to inform us of what is happening, with no slant on it either way. I'm really having a hard time understanding your anger or frustration with this post.
Posted by: Becky at September 25, 2003 10:02 AMBecky, I'm sorry I appeared angry with Kelly or anyone. I'm not the same "anonymous" as the first one who posted. I didn't mean that anyone here was pointing fingers- sorry, wrong choice of words. I don't have any opinion of this, I just wanted people to wait on details before getting upset. I'm certainly not frustrated with the post. It is information we need to know. I was just clarifying the point that we need more details before assuming too much. Definitely not directed towards Kelly. Sorry for any misunderstanding.
Posted by: anonymous at September 25, 2003 11:11 AMHi,
I am a little disturbed by an apparent readiness to almost automatically disbelieve or discount such reports. Clearly all of the facts are not in but surely it is a sad possibility that there is a criminal element involved in some adoptions. That does not mean all or most or even very many adoptions nor does it mean adoptions should stop. It does mean that agencies, adoptive parents and governments responsible for children do need to be vigilant as, if the story is true, the Costa Rican government apparently was. By always denying that there could be any wrongdoing we run the danger of being labeled as naive or deliberately blind.
