Relief Efforts in Guatemala from Hurricane Stan

Project Happiness with Hands of Hope has launched their own emergency relief program by putting together "Family Disaster Relief Boxes" for victims of the flooding and landslides. These boxes contain much needed items such as soap, food, vitamins, blankets, etc. Each box costs a mere $20.

Read More about their Relief Boxes here.

Please continue to post other aide efforts. This is a massive relief effort and each organization is key to the people affected by the disaster.

Hi Kelly,
Can we send blankets that we have in our home to this relief fund? I have several comforters that I could send?
My prayers for the beautiful people of Guatemala.

Thanks,
Karen

Hi everyone: While I am not involved with any of the aid organizations, I know that most of them prefer monetary donations so that they can purchase the things they need. When donations of items arrive, they often don't have the people-power to go through the items and distribute them. The attorney that I work with suggested money so they could buy the items as needed for the various families on their case load that were impacted. While I'm sure blankets are needed, some money (no matter how little) would be more helpful. I certainly know it will be appreciated.

Vivian is correct.

Unfortunately, the time it takes to ship and get through customs (which has been a recent problem with container taxes), it has lost some effectiveness. I wish that this was a viable solution since I also have lots of items that I could give away.

But it *IS* easier for an organization to buy in bulk and make consistent care packages for these folks.

Thanks for posting this info. The other night, when I saw the photos of body bags in Tecpan online, I burst into tears and ran up to my husband. One of our daughter's birthmothers is from Tecpan. I just became very concerned and upset. I have just sent my contribution for relief boxes.

Thank you for keeping us informed of the relief efforts. I just donated money for the relief boxes. I am so glad you provided an avenue for us to give back.

Vivian is correct. Also I understand that many people of Mayan descent refuse to wear Western style clothing, so used tee-shirts and jeans are not welcome either.
