My husband and I started our adoption plan thru an agency in Roanoke, Va. and then was switched to Carolina Adoption Agency in Greensboro, N.C. not long after. At first it was frustrating to switch, double paperwork and limited input from the original agency. However, CAS took us under their wing and has answered all our questions and concerns ( as I find them on the web). I know that our adoption process will not be like someone else's. I do know that I am more knowledgeable because of them and have full confidence in how things are going to work out. They are a life line and would recommend them to everyone that live on the East Coast.

I just submitted my comments. It could not be easier. As for me, I think it is very important that we let others know about very good as well as very bad agencies.

My husband and I are in the middle of adopting a child from Guatemala through Christian World Adoption in Flat Rock, NC. Although our adoption is in mid-process, we could not be happier with C.W.A. Everyone that we have dealt with each step of the way has been encouraging, informative and sincerely cares about each family that is adopting. We feel very lucky to be a part of their program.

Is this a full list? My agency said thay had already applied but I don't see them

Posted by: K at December 15, 2006 08:43 AM

Is the Hague accredidation these agencies are seeking only for Guatemalan adoptions? Or are they seeking accredidation to continue international adoptions from any country?
Since I have adopted from more than one country, this affects what I address in my comments.

Thanks,

Perfect they will now be getting complaints from anyone and everyone..
I wonder if they would be intrested in the many parents who complained for months then went on to dissrupt theyre doptions or better ended up in the pcych wards for depression.. Perhaps the Agencies should finally come foward and tell theyre stories-

I have a question before we post a comment on our adoption agency. We have been matched with a baby for 6 months. They said we were in family court in October and DNA has still not been requested as of today, 12/17/06.

1. Is this normal for DNA not to be requested by now?

2. Does everyone have contacts to their attorney in Guatemala and their agency in Guatemala? We only have the USA contact and they tell us not to call over there.

3. Has anybody had a baby brought home recently? If so could you tell us how old they are and how long you have been in the process? Our agency is telling us they are taking a very long time now and I would just like to know how long most people are seeing.

THANK YOU!!

We used our adoption agency when we adopted our first baby from Guatemla and we had a wonderful experience. We are in our 2nd adoption with them and are having the smae experience. YOu could not have asked for a Gody, and professioal agency that we are using.
They are based out of Greenville SC

To answer some questions:
1.) Hague Accreditation is to operate in any Hague country, not just Guatemala
2.) 6 months is a long time for DNA approval
3.) Most families do not have direct contact with the attorney

Hi Nathan- To answer question #3:
We brought our baby home in October 2006, he was 5 months old and the process took 4 months (from referral to home). Please be aware that all cases are different depends if the birthmother was a minor, PGN, etc.
Regarding DNA, you might want to start asking your agency alot of questions regarding if all necessary papers have been submitted to the USEmbassy for pre-approval, etc. Keep us posted on developments. Marie

My "facilitator" is not on the list, but God only knows what name is using these days? Is there any way to find out if she is under another name OR can a person email them anyway and comment about her?

Posted by: Denise at December 17, 2006 01:55 PM

Hi All,
Just need to get this off my chest! I think it is terrible that some smaller, long standing, very ethical agencies are not seeking accreditation because it is cost prohibitive for a smaller agency. My agency is very good, does a lot of good things in Guatemala, and has great people, who work with ethical people in Guatemala, and they might have to stop doing Guatemala adoptions because the cost of accreditation is cost prohibitive for them. This is shameful. While some of the large, bad agencies will be able to pay the cost and may be allowed to continue? What is wrong with that picture? Don't think that I am saying that all small agencies are good and all large ones are bad, please folks! But in my case, my small agency is good and seems like it will be left out. I also know of several large agencies that I would definitely classify as "bad". Can we make positive comments about agencies that are not on the list? And perhaps as a collective raise this issue?

I have direct contact with the attorney in Guatemala. and his phone number. He is extremely wonderful in answering his emails and phone calls and sending monthly pictures of her. Our daughter is now 15 months and we had her at 7 days old. We did not need a referral because we selected her picture off the internet. We are currently waiting for the director of PGN to sign her case off. We are hoping by January she will be home!! As far as our agency, they have been great to work with in LA.

Posted by: Jen at December 18, 2006 06:31 AM

Nathan if your attorney hasn't gotten DNA approval in 6 mo they are definitely NO GOOD. I think it's time for you to call in Adoption Supervisors. Hopefully someone who has used them will provide the correct contact info. We brought our son home in November. Our process took 7 months and that included 3 1/2 months in PGN.
Get help and Good Luck!

Sane,

Huh? Are you honestly suggesting that agencies are victimized by crazy clients, without any means of defending themselves? Ha! That's good stuff! I especially like the poor wording. I had to read it a few times to understand you, which just made the joke even funnier. Keep it coming; I can't wait to read your next post!

Hi,

How do I call in adoption supervisors? When I email the Department of Homeland Security which says "Adoptions, Guatemala" they just say there is no record of our case or baby, but the agency says it is there and that the embassy is slow and would not know until they have it in the computer.

What should we do. What is so bad is that we did a first adoption with this agency and now they are doing this and acting like it is the Guatemala system and US government fault when I think it is the actual agency not doing their job.

They will not give me a contact to the atttorney over there and I don't know who to talk to but do not want to make people mad also and they intentionally slow our case down.

It should not be this way.

Thanks for any help!!

To "Lizzie"
I just heard from the small but very good, ethical agency that we used for our adoption that it will be too expensive for them to go throught the process of getting accreditation. I'm sad about this.

Nathan Turner, Contact serjuin@adoption-supervisors.com
Edwin and Manfred will assist you and they are fabulous. They are well worth any money you will pay. They will keep in contact with you weekly, respond to all emails very quickly, give you honest and upfront answers unlike many adoption agencies we have all hired. They will be out of their office between Christmas and after New Years, so contact them immediately or wait until after the first of the year. Merry Christmas to everyone who is still waiting for your beautiful child.

Nathan,

Before you call Adoption Supervisors and spend 3,000 or more. Let me tell you about our adoption case. We received our referral on May 2, 2005 and finally completed our adoption on Dec 7, 2006. Our DNA testing was not done until April 3, 2006. In the beginning for the first 6 mo., we made numerous attempts, to get our agency to give us info on what was going on with our case. They continually told us that the attorney was not sending them any info and therefore they did not know. They blamed everything on the Guatemalan system “ we are dealing with a third world country…” is what they ALWAYS told me. Finally we found out that our BM is from El Salvador. This is why our case was so held up. Then we hit all of the US Embassy issues that cropped up and the issues with PGN. I’m really cutting out a lot of “stuff’ just to keep it short.

To cut to the point make your agency do what you hired them for…process your adoption and keep in contact with their Guate contacts. We also looked into AS and found that they only tell you what is happening with your case, they don’t fix it, hence the SUPERVISE. Keep your money and make your agency do what your hired them for.

Currently we are on our 2nd adoption. We had a nightmare that happened on our first adoption. The adoption agency through Minn took forever. In the final stages we had our home visit (in preparation to bringing our daughter home). During that time we found out that our soon to be daughter was with potential family. (How in the world could an agency let this happen??) Lucky for us we have a wonderful local agency that stepped in and took control. To this day we still want to let our frustration out at the company from Minn. (Beware of those companies listed from Minnesota)..

Posted by: one to remember at December 28, 2006 05:09 PM

Nathan, I'm so sorry it's taken this long and you're still not moving in the process. Your story sounds like ours. We finally started asking questions when we got about as far along as you and it took another 6 months before we finally had to give up our baby and move on to another referral. We had even been down to visit her. Very painful but we were told it was the facilitator in Guat that was not doing anything with our docs. I think there was more to it but we never could get to the bottom of it. We have just taken on a new referral and this time with the advice of Kevin and Troy, we made sure that we would only accept a referral with a reputable attorney, okayed by Kevin, Troy and Adoption Supervisors, whom we hired. It's been really tough to go through and we're hopoing this new baby will finally get to be ours! Arvella

Posted by: Arvella at January 1, 2007 09:50 AM

One to Remeber,

Sorry you had such an awful experience with your agency in Minnesota, but I would hardly warn people to beware of ALL agencies from Minnesota. Minnesota has one of the highest rates of international adoption in the US and they have some of the most informed agencies, if nothing else because of the wealth of information and frequency of adoption. We had a wonderful experience, would do it again, would recommend our agency and know of three of reputable Twin Cities agencies that also do great work.

Posted by: Nora at January 2, 2007 10:04 AM

Nathan,

Our adoption process is also taking very long. We are almost a year into it. We received our referral on 2/13/06. On 8/31, the DNA test was done (6 1/2 months later!). We entered PGN on 11/2. We don't know when our daughter will be home.

Don't be discouraged - there can be many reasons for delays. Our case was delayed because our Guatemalan social worker became ill. We were not aware and nothing was done with our case for over 6 months.

Keep demanding answers from your agency. I hope your child is home with you very soon.

Posted by: Anne at January 2, 2007 03:48 PM

This is a warning to all the people out there who are thinking of international adoption.
Do not use an adoption agency (lawyers) from Orlando. They have strung us along for a year now and it appears that the referrel that was given to us is not a child who can be adopted. They were very happy to take our money and played very nice until we gave it to them. After that they have been rude and hostile and unwilling to help accomplish our goal of adoption. If you are considering an agency out of Orlando, please check the better business bureau before getting into bed with these unscrupulous people.

Has anyone adopted with Main Street Adoption in PA? My husband and I are considering them and looking for more information. Thanks!

Posted by: Jo Lynn at June 24, 2008 04:51 PM

Hi Lynn,

My husband and I have lost our hearts, twice and over $30,000 with Main Street. They are formidable to say the least. We have met over 20 families on line in similiar circumstances. Main Street feels that their illusionary contract covers them ("internationa adoptions are risky and no fund are refundable") and if they hire criminals in other countries to work on your adoption, they have zero liability should that person run away with the money, hire other criminals and never really get your dossier off the ground. We lost two toddler girls back to back both at the END of the process and after being begged to pay the final fees early because they were out of money and needed it to complete the adoptions. Please feel free to contact me via Kevin at Guat adopt. Just email him and he will put you in touch with me. Another family is on their 4th referral and can not get their dossier in order and into the final courts, please, they are very charming, MASTER MANIPULATORS.

I'm trying to save you a horrific loss. The first family to arbitrate against them WON on May 20, 2008, now the civil suits are being filed, they will not be in business long (if we have anything to do with it), but they would love to take your money.
