PGN Concerned About Children Being Abandoned

A story appeared on the Teledario news Saturday. It is about how PGN is concerned about the number of newborns being abandoned. It mentions four in the "last days", two of whom sadly did not survive. While we can not say that these children would otherwise have been relinquished, it has to make one think...

The story can be found here: http://www.telediario.com.gt/index.php?id=191&id_seccion=187&id_noticia=4278

This breaks my heart, but why is anyone surprised???? In trying to "fix" a "problem" with adoptions, we ALL knew things were going to get bad. I pray that God will work mightily in the hearts of those that can make positive changes, for the babies without homes and for the poor women who feel they have no other way out!

If PGN is so concerned, maybe they can do something about it. I know from listening to the radio show that "some" are trying to do the right thing and start the pilot program ~~~~~~~but what about NOW and all the children who are stuck in limbo or worse.

Kevin - is there anything we can do??? I know we don't have control over this as Guat is another country but as each day passes this is getting harder and harder to sit by and just wait for this to turn around for the better.

So sad for the children and the mothers who feel they have no better alternative.

If the PGN is so concerned, perhaps they could start by moving things along and FINALLY clearing out the outstanding grandfathered cases, so that they can then focus their efforts on how best to help the newly abandoned children.

Less talk and more action from all relevant parties would be nice.

Very sad. And yes perhaps PGN will do something productive to protect and save these newborns.

And as mentioned "PGN could start moving cases along.... We need to be thankful-- at least in these grandfathered cases-- the children are SAFE and ALIVE either in hogars or foster homes. Unfortunate for the numerous delays but fortunate to have a place to rest their heads.

PGN concerned about the newborns who are being abandoned? BS! Maybe there are a select few who are more concerned about the children and the mothers who cannot care for them, but sadly there seems to be more of them whose only concern is how much $$ they can make "hanging onto" the cases that were grandfathered. How old does "Grandpa" have to get before his "Grandchildren" can go home? This is not just a problem with PGN, it's the courts and other officials as well. If they really want to help these children, someone needs to have the balls to clean house and hire people to finish the job at hand so that these mothers who really have no options have a safe place to take their children and give them a chance at life, whether that be with a Guatemalan family, US or any other country. May God have mercy on the souls of the greedy whose selfishness adversely affects the life of a precious child!

I'm curious, why is it PGN's fault that children have been abandoned in the streets of Guatemala?

I thought it was the fault of the corrupt, money-hungry, lying and stealing attorneys and hogar directors?

Sure, there were the corrupt judges and the corrupt PGN officials who approved adoptions fraudulently. But they have been fired, from what I've read over the course of the past year.

And maybe it is the Office of the Attorney General who is concerned about the children being abandoned and not necessarily the department that is processing adoptions as the CNA is responsible for the new adoptions.

It is tragic and beyond sad that children are left abandoned in the streets. Unfortunately this truth happened one mile from my home in the US where a child was found in a dumpster and the birthmother had all the options in the world. I don't think that adoptions is the only solution that will fix things. As it is obvious that there are children who are in hogares that are over the age of 2 and other children a little younger who were never matched with parents.

I truly hope that Guatemala figures things out. I truly hope that the greedy to manipulate the new system. I would love nothing more than to be able to adopt again -- but not at the expense of integrity.

For those still in process, may God's grace be with you as you continue to fight for your kids.

This is truly a sad situation. In the post it states how there are so many new borns being adopted out. Well the times have changed everywhere in the world. Women werent so sexually active as the are now, the age of these girls having babies are getting younger and younger, families can't take on more children when they can't feed those in their house as it is and adoption is more accepted than it was 10 or 20 years ago. This is in Guatemala and everywhere else. Its not just women that are in relationships its women who have been raped. In Guatemala most of the people are Catholic and do not beleive in abortion (neither do I) and if they want to have a abortion they can not offord it or risk medical complications due to the abortion. I do not claim to know all of the facts but its not only in Guatemala but its everywhere. I am very thankful for my sons biological mothers choice to put her child up for adoption. How can a single woman survive with 4 children only making $80.00 a month. These women arent educated to know when they can concieve or not. Nor can they defend themselves from unwanted sex. Its a sad situation but if someone wants to help this situation in Guatemala go down to Guatemala and volunteer. Uplift these women and children. Pride is very strong in Guatemala. Dont try to Americanize them but love them and help them.

Yes, we have seen an increase in babies abandoned, as well. These would have been relinquished for adoption, we know for sure. A side effect of no adoptions is that women who early on wanted to make a decision to relinquish, now have no options, so they get no prenatal care, no psychological care, no encouragement. We've had two babies "offered" to us in the last two months; both mothers said they were going to leave them in the hospital hallway and sneak out an exit. Volunteering in Guatemala is a good thing, but not all can do that. A great way to help is to donate to the orphanages that are still open, and especially to Orphan Resources www.OrphanResources.org who provide food and help to orphanages.
