Reuter's Story

Reuter's has a story running about how Sobrevivientes is pushing for US help in obtaining DNA tests for the children we're read so much about. My opinion is that I support the US trying to help out how it can, within the framework of the law of course.

There's one paragraph in the story worth pointing out:
"Some 3,000 cases that started under the previous adoption system are still in progress, with prosecutors promising to meticulously examine the files for fraud. So far, about half have been completed successfully, and the rest will likely be resolved by the end of January, said a spokesman for the new adoption authority."

I have no further info and can only hope there is some truth to this!!!

Praying that is true! They should be ashamed of themselves for the TWO YEAR delays! Those children need to come home..they and their parents deserve it!

Fingers, toes, arms, and legs all crossed. Please let this be true for those waiting.

I do hope they come home soon! Is there any thoughts about children adopted many years ago? I adopted by son 5 years ago. The article is scaring me a little bit.

I'm assuming these "3000" cases just the ones that are going through PGN? Because I can guarantee that there is no way the transition cases will all be done by January. It's not even possible.

I am not understanding the numbers. I thought that there were less than a thousand cases left being processed and thought some of those were now going the CNA route. Where did the 3000 number come from? One thousand kids waiting for families is bad enough, please tell me the numbers in the article are not accurate. I hope that the old PGN cases will start to move again and that those kids can finally come home.

Our case is being investigated because our child was born in a private hospital to a single woman with 5 children, making only $60 a month. The 1st hearing on adoptability took place the first of Oct and PGN whined that they had not had enough time to investigate. (3+ months) Hearing 2 (which is SUPPOSED to be the FINAL hearing) they pulled it off again. Now our child has to wait until April. The judge wanted to grant adoptability BOTH times. I understand the questions they have as to how a woman of such meager means afforded the private hospital as opposed to the free national hospital, but she showed up for all appointments, interviews that PGN themselves conducted and now that is not good enough for them. The ad ran in newspapers and no one came forward. Shouldn't our child technically be considered abandoned regardless of the circumstances surrounding where the child was born? I know, I am beating a dead horse here. Praying that they will FINALLY do what is best for the children left waiting.

There is a new statement/letter posted on the CNA's website ~ can anyone translate?

I so hope this is true!! But like another poster said "where did the 3000 come from"... Guate 900 had posted there was something like 400+ cases left...
I pray for all the families and children that Guate can get these last cases completed ASAP... These families and children deserve to be united finally. I do not see how 2+yrs of waiting and investigating is helping anyone here, especially the children. You can only investigate and pass a file around so many times to realize there is NOTHING wrong in it. But it seems someone feels if they keep passing it from person to person something will magically appear in the file, that has not been seen in over 2 yrs of investigating??
LET THESE CHILDREN COME HOME!! IT HAS BEEN LONG ENOUGH!!!

Anonoymous - wondering who your judge is (sounds like my favorite judge in court #3), the same thing happened to us. We have actually been issued an abandonment decree 3 times by two different judges and a certificate of adoptabilty and cleared by the Sala .....placed ads in 2007 and in all 3 major publications again in 2009, no one ever came forward, We have been investigated by MP, PGN - 3 times and National Police ,which is the new route many of the judges are taking as they don't trust PGN's info or ability to get the work done. Reality is they are trying to still find someone, anyone to proscute for "selling" their child and see if they can find out who they got money from so they can prosecute them for "child trafficing"...it has nothing to do with stolen children. They still want to have a case they can prosecute to show that see - we have proof the babies were being sold. and with only a few cases left they want some sacrificial lambs, along with everyone is afraid to be the one who lets "the one" get away. Its just timing for those of us left....and it is not because they can find any fraudulent papers, negative DNA's etc...just we are the unlucky ones. Trust me, I know of cases that completed that were not squeakly clean and no one cared.

"I do hope they come home soon! Is there any thoughts about children adopted many years ago? I adopted by son 5 years ago. The article is scaring me a little bit. "

Me too! And this article is scaring me and my wife a lot. My wife specifically chose foreign adoption to prevent something like this from happening--having a child taken away years later which can happen all to often in domestic adoptions.

This article is frightening beyond belief! Stuff like this wasn't supposed to happen with a foreign adoption! Is our child at risk?

In what I can only pen "the strongest possible terms", I do not think there is anything for us to worry about. Us being those of us with kids home.

It is of course possible that out of the tens of thousands of adoptions there will be a few isolated incidents where some allegations could be made.

What saddens me is to see that we all have to ponder these things at all. But really, don't worry...

Thank you very much Kevin! Your kind words have really set my mind at ease. I was up all night worrying, going over the adoption papers again, getting research. I should be able to sleep tonight!

We are closing in on 3 years in process--perfect DNA match etc. but birthmother was too scared to leave her new boyfriend and come in for her 3rd!! interview.

Anyway, still stuck trying to get an abandonment ruled just so that we can go into the CNA. This info about things being wrapped up soon is simply not true as we know many many others in similar shoes of permanent, undeserved, limbo.
