Investigation Clears Pres. Colom

A UN based investigation has found that Rodrigo Rosenberg commissioned his own killing, filming the video to try to place blame on President Colom. For the sake of the country, if for noother reason, I am happy this was the finding.

Very interesting...

As in everything in Guatemala, things are not always what they seem. This finding is pretty controversial in Guatemala. Most people I have spoken to, here in Guatemala, don't seem to believe this as being true. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Regardless, if this is true or not most people in Guatemala feel pretty hopeless and helpless to effect any change, anywhere.

Interesting, small article, in Tuesday's Prensa Libre regarding the Cicig's finding that Lic. Rosenberg had himself killed and then blamed his murder on President Colom. Archbishop Quezada Toruño was quoted during Sunday's mass in Guatemala City as saying that we have the version of the Cicig but this case has not gone to trial and that what is missing in the legal process. The archbishop refers to the legal process as a triangle, the accusation, the defense and the judge's decision. And to date none of that has happened. The Cicig is not part of the legal process.

I agree completely with Nancy regarding the helpless and hopeless sense among the people.

This was another one of those times when I was way in the minority, as right away, Colom's reaction made me think he didn't do it, and the weirdness of videotaping and not fleeing the country made me wonder if RR wasn't trying to go out in a blaze of glory.

Sadly, the fact that Colom wasn't involved with RR's death doesn't mean he is a good president. More and more things come out suggesting corruption and stealing all over his regime.

It was an ironic bummer, though, especially, that the only time people called for Justice in a significant way turned out to be for a cause that was dubious at best.

Meanwhile, Justice cries in the streets, and no one seems to notice.

Today former Guatemalan President Alfonso Portillo was finally captured and taken away. There will most likely be a very long legal process before or if he is extradited to the United States for money laundering charges. He has a very large group of lawyers and quit a bit of money so the process could be a long one. When I asked several Guatemalans today, different class levels, about the millions of dollars Portillo stole being returned to Guatemala all of them said they thought most would be returned but only to be stolen again. That is pure hopelessness and I expect the truth of what will happen to the returned money.
