http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110321/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/lt_guatemala_election_divorceA few items of interest out there:
1.) The mothers who had protested heavily through Sobrevivientes are back trying again to bring attention to their plight. It is unthinkable that these women have been waiting so long for answers - whatever they may be., Story in the Prensa Libre on it: http://www.prensalibre.com/noticias/justicia/Mujeres-demandan-justicia_0_446955314.html
2.) Speaking of Sobrevivientes, Norma Cruz will be the featured speaker at an upcoming conference in DC April 4. Also on the agenda are a number of othe familiar faces. I'm hoping I cna attend. You cna find all info here: Download file
3.) Aye aye aye. It's going to be an ugly election season in Guatemala. In order to get around a law that prohibits family members of the president from running, First Lady Sandra Colom has filed for divorce... Kevin, I'm very curious about your posting and small commentary here, because you've spent a fair amount of time denying, deflecting, or minimizing the plight of these women and their allegations, especially those in connection with Susana Luarca — Guatadopt's "expert" on adoptions — who is now firmly linked to the Anyeli case. You have also been clear (at least to me) on your opinion of Norma Cruz and Sobrevivientes mission in regard to these mothers. Have you had a change in tune?

No Jennifer, you are just remembering your interpretation of my feelings on this. To ever insinuate, accuse, or in any way imply that I at any time would have stood back and ignore or deny issues of kidnapping is wrong!

What I have said, and still believe, is that I do not believe Susana would have ever knowingly been involved with a kidnapped child.

I have said that parts of the stories given don't add up. I don't believe these cases necessarily went down 100% the way Sobrevivientes has reported them. But that DOES NOT in any way mean that I am doubting or have doubted the veracity of the mom's desire to find their kids.

Do I believe Norma to be 100% saint - no. Can people achieve personal fame and fight for a good cause at the same time - yes. Can it sometimes create grey areas - yes.

And I have always mantained that the truth needs to be determined once and for all.

All too often in the heated debates on this that happened in the past, people read one statement that wasn't 100% in line with their and ten went for the jugular. I have not and will not fall into that. But I honestly believe that's where some of your comment came from.

Paz,

Kevin
